NS Railways - Ticket Design

This project was a mock design exercise for my Interface Design course at Tufts University in Spring 2022.

The hypothetical client, NS Railways, is a passenger rail company in the Netherlands. It offers rides across the Netherlands, as well as connecting journeys to other parts of the EU. As one of the largest rail companies in the world, their branding materials need to reflect their reliability.

For this project, I designed a new train ticket for NS Railways passengers, focusing on implementing good informational and graphic design. I created the design in InDesign.

Design & Rationale

Text Hierarchies

The most important information is large and dark, while labels and secondary/tertiary information are smaller and lighter.

Information Design

The most important info is visible right at the top at a quick glance. General information about the ride logistics is grouped at the left. Specific information about the passenger’s placement within the train is listed above the train graphic. This follows the Western standard for F-shaped reading paths.

Design Elements

I used NS RAilways existing branding in blue and yellow for a bold and colorful finish. The simple line-art train graphic is compelling and fun without being distracting.
